I may have found a solution to the main-page-as-photo-and-text issue. My thought is to use the Wordpress Sticky plugin to make a permanent post on the right side, one that contains a mini-gallery linking to different pages on the site.
The problem is, I only have one day of vacation left, so I might not solve this before I get back to Boston.
